2nd Annual Tournament raises $10,000 for KidSport

The second edition of the highly anticipated Mern Coveny Memorial Tournament has concluded with resounding success.

This year, we witnessed an even greater number of teams registering, truly highlighting the growing popularity and significance of this event. The collective efforts of participants and supporters have resulted in a remarkable achievement, as the tournament successfully raised an astounding $10,000 for KidSport Ontario. This substantial sum encompasses contributions from team entry fees, generous individual donations, the 50/50 draw, and the silent auction.

KidSport supports children who need financial assistance with sport registration fees and equipment costs. They believe that the power of sport participation promotes the development of children's social, mental and physical well-being. Through increasing access to quality sport programs, KidSport strengthens communities across Canada.

The 2023 Mern Coveney Memorial Tournament donation will help cover the costs of enrolment so that kids aged 18 and under in Ontario can play a season of sport.

The first two rounds

This year marked a significant milestone for our tournament play as we decided to expand the number of participating teams from 10 to 16. This expansion allowed us to create two solid divisions, setting the stage for an even more thrilling and competitive event.

The tournament began with a great sense of excitement, and the competition in the first and second rounds was undeniably fierce. The teams showcased their remarkable abilities, thoughtful tactics, and unyielding perseverance. Every match was a thrilling spectacle, as the teams fought to secure their positions in the upcoming rounds.

The Championship Round

The championship round was filled with exhilarating moments and intense competition. In the Recreation division, the Mutha Puckers and the AAH Vets battled it out for three periods with no goals, showcasing the remarkable defensive skills of both teams. However, in the final seconds of the overtime, the Mutha Puckers seized the opportunity and managed to score, clinching the championship in a thrilling conclusion.

Meanwhile, in the competitive division, the Chippin Chiclets and the Hammertown Dusters engaged in a nail-biting contest that ended in a 1-1 tie, showcasing their incredible offensive and defensive prowess. As the game headed into overtime, the play went end to end, with both goalies performing spectacular saves, leaving the scoreboard untouched by new goals.

The excitement escalated further as the game entered a shootout. Both teams displayed exceptional skill and determination, each taking five rounds of shootouts to break the deadlock. Finally, in a moment of triumph, the Hammertown Dusters managed to score, securing the championship title after an intense battle.

The conclusion of this highly competitive game left the spectators on the edge of their seats, witnessing an extraordinary display of talent and sportsmanship. The charity tournament came to a thrilling close, showcasing the immense passion and skill of the women's hockey teams involved.

Congratulations to the Mutha Puckers and the Hammerton Dusters.

50/50 Draw Winner

Thanks to the tremendous support and generosity shown by our community, the 50/50 draw funds flourished throughout the event, reaching an impressive total of $870.00. The winning number was revealed on the day of the tournament, and Janelle, a dedicated spectator cheering for the Vintage Ice team, emerged as the fortunate recipient, taking home a substantial prize of $435.00. In a heartwarming display of altruism, Janelle exemplified the true spirit of giving by graciously donating $100.00 of her winnings back to the charity.
